Meet the stallholders..tea and cake with Hannah Daw from Iris Accessories

Hannah was another one of our original stallholders who lives in Gipsy Hill, London. She makes jewellery under the name Iris Accessories. We loved having her and are so pleased she's going to be with us on Saturday 11th.

For those who don't know, please tell us what do you make.

I make vintage button silver bracelets, necklaces and belts from vintage buckles

When and why did you start doing this?

I started my business in April and was inspired by a course I did at Central St Martin’s and beautiful buttons of course!

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?

I get my ideas from bold designs and colours, whether it be buildings or fabric swatches! I love the 50s

Why did you want to be part of “It’s darling!”?

"It’s darling!" is an energetic, creative fair where interesting and diverse artists come together, so I love being part of it. I sold in July and loved it, especially the atmosphere.

Are you doing anything special with your stall?

I have now started making necklaces which is very exciting and am selling little kid’s bracelets – perfect for stocking fillers!

Describe your ideal Christmas day...

I would be in my new home with my whole family, wearing a glam dress and red lipstick, with a glass of bubbly from the off! There would be lots of drinking and eating with a lovely walk in the park to finish off

What’s your favourite cake? And kind of tea?

Lemon cupcakes with Earl Grey

What would you say “It’s darling!” about in your life? And can you send a pic if poss?

Here's my Christmas tree that I have just decorated with the sparkly lights on!

Meet the stallholders...tea and cake with Eirlys Penn from Scrapiana

Back in July we held our very first "It's darling!" and Eirlys was one of the traders who put her faith in us and took a stall. We were immensely grateful to her, as we were to all the original stallholders and are very pleased that many of them have booked again.  Here's what she has to say.

Tomato pincushions

Hello, for those of us who don't know you already, please introduce yourself.

I’m Eirlys Penn, and I live in Larkhall on the East side of the city of Bath. My stall, and my blog are called Scrapiana.  I sell a cornucopia of vintage haberdashery and related items: buttons, wooden cotton reels, embroidery thread, red-and-white baker’s twine, packets
of bias binding, old belt buckles, ric-rac, etc. But I’m also an enthusiastic upcycler, making new things from discarded scraps etc. This Christmas, for example, I’ve been making lavender heart ornaments from worn-out woollen blankets, and lucky tomato pincushions from other textile scraps (above). Haberdashery fridge magnets are my latest thing – I’ve been having lots of fun making those out of buttons and giant snap fasteners!

Sounds amazing! Now who is in this picture?

It's a picture of me (left) with an old college friend, Kate, in New York a couple of years ago. I managed to do a trawl of the historic textile and millinery districts of the city during that visit (Wow!). Kate is an antiquarian bookseller and years ago she gave me one of my treasured old sewing textbooks; eerily, it had been inscribed by someone bearing exactly the same name as me, back in the 1930s. I have an obscure Welsh name, and have never actually met another Eirlys, let alone one with the same surname too. So how spooky is that? I also sell old sewing books, sewing and knitting patterns, so do look out for those on my stall.

Why did you start Scrapiana?

I’ve never had any trouble attracting bric-a-brac,  especially sewing-related, and I did the first "It’s Darling!" in July, partly to clear the decks slightly, partly to gauge the response and see what people liked. I really enjoyed it, and the response was lovely, though my decks remain remarkably cluttered, but that’s another story.

My day job is quite solitary (I’m locked away writing most of the time) but I love meeting people and nattering; my first jobs were ALL interfacing with the public and press (I was a salesperson, receptionist, then press officer for a couple of publishers) and that was perhaps too far the other way for me. Writing, making things, then frantically interfacing with the public on high days and holidays is about the right mix for me.

What inspires you?

In terms of making things, there are some favourite blogs I follow; people like English sewing author Ruth Singer, and Americans Mimi Kirchner and Lisa Brainerd (two hugely creative American crafters). If you pinned me down on an era, I might have to say early-mid-20th century. I find any vintage of cotton reel and button interesting, though darning ephemera
(cards of darning yarn), especially from the 1930s, is currently catching my eye. I also love the Singer sewing machines of the mid-20th century, especially the celery-white 221Ks made in Scotland in the 1960s (below).

Why did you want to be part of “It’s darling!”?

July was great! There was a nice mix of other stalls, and the stall-holders were lovely. I originally heard about it via Twitter (I think I was somehow following @mrsstokeschina and caught her tweet).

Are you doing anything special with your stall?

YES! Lavender scrap wool hearts.  If you catch me at a quiet moment I’ll show you how to make your own. I’ve blogged about them here.

Describe your ideal Christmas day

If I had my way, I wouldn’t get out of my pjs! I love just watching the boys open their gifts, while admiring the tree - hopefully bedecked with a few shiny buttons, cotton reels, lavender hearts and gingerbread cookies! A glass of something bubbly wouldn’t go amiss.

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without….

Singing! There has to be a lot of music in my Christmas: give me a burst of Handel’s Messiah and my cup runneth over. I sing in a church choir, and I really value its quiet companionship throughout the year. Christmas kind of falls into place for me around that activity. Oh, and gingerbread cookies. I make vast amounts every year.

Then there’s the excitement of late Christmas Eve trying to get everything done and wrapped and swig the sherry and munch Santa’s mince pie so that the kids are fooled, and listen to Carols from Kings, and watch It’s a Wonderful Life, and read The Night Before Christmas and The Velveteen Rabbit (‘There was once a velveteen rabbit, and in the beginning he was really splendid…he had real thread whiskers, and his ears were pink sateen.’) and stay up WAY too late trying to make everything magical.

What’s your favourite cake? And kind of tea?

New York cheesecake (is that cheating?) or lemon drizzle cake (I have a very good recipe c/o Sophie Grigson). Lapsang Souchong is probably my favourite tea: the smokiness is almost as good as a log fire in the depths of winter, and it makes me feel like I’m drinking something slightly illicit when I’m really being very good and abstemious. Earl Grey comes a close second. Favourite cafĂ©? I like Bloomsbury, Shoon and can’t wait to try the
new Patisserie Valerie, conveniently opposite the Guildhall, all in Bath. It takes me
back to when I worked near Soho; I don’t think I ever went in (publishers don’t pay well), but used to press my nose up to the window. I love the exquisite arrangements of gateaux, and the soft lighting.

What would you say “It’s darling!” about in your life?

I have a bit of a thing for old scissors: buttonhole scissors and pinking shears especially, and you’ll find some on my stall. A while back, I managed to get hold of an old-fashioned pinking machine, the sort pre-scissor which you mount onto a table edge and work with a crank-handle. Singer used to make one as a sewing-machine attachment, but that’s another story. I love this one because it’s quite small and dainty, and it takes an ordinary piece
of card and turns it into a beautifully flute-edged thing. Now, THAT’S what I call ‘It’s Darling!’…

Meet the stallholders...tea and cake with Teri Mayo from Treasured Vintage

One week to go and still so many stallholders to meet! Here's Teri Mayo from Caerphilly in South Wales who makes sparkly, glamorous jewellery and accessories under the banner "Treasured Vintage."

We want one of these!

Hi Teri, tell us more about what you do.

We (my mother and I) make restored, repaired and upcycled vintage jewellery. We will also be bringing some reproduction vintage bags made with lovely Harris tweed and some vintage brooches.

And how did you get into this?

I have always loved vintage clothing and jewellery and was always on the hunt for the perfect find. Although the jewellery is beautiful I found many pieces were not very wearable and the pieces I could afford were badly damaged and in need of repair. Therefore I believe I found a lovely little gap which I will beautifully fill. I like my pieces to be affordable and always using the best quality materials and I absolutely adore all my pieces and it pains me to part with them. With help from my mother we have been buying and repairing since July and now are ready to show our makes to the world.

Beautifully restored vintage pearl earrings

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?

I love Art Deco my very first vintage earrings my husband bought from Caernarfon North Wales on a mini break. They were onyx and marcasite with a semi circle bottom and they are hinged so sway with movement. They are stunning and he bought me a mother of pearl set when we returned on honeymoon.

Why did you want to be part of “It’s darling!”?

I discovered "it's Darling!" when a friend suggested it ideal for us to be a part of. We feel "It's darling!" encompasses our ethos perfectly. We feel really privileged to be a part of such a well-organised and special fair. We are very excited.

We are happy to have you, as we are all our stallholders. Are you doing anything special with your stall for "It's darling!" by the way?
We will be bringing along a wide selection of our creations perfect to accompany any party dresses for the festive session and beyond. We will also we bring some handmade pieces made from semi precious gemstones and some vintage reproduction bags.

Any brides out there need one of these

Describe your ideal Christmas day...

My ideal Christmas is at home with my husband and two little boys. The house is warm and beautiful decorated and has rich smells coming from the kitchen the children are happy and playing with there new toys and hubby and I are enjoying a glass of buzz’s fizz.

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without…. A perfectly decorated tree and twinkley lights. Gosh I am getting so excited !

Teri having a well-earned break

Now onto the sugary bit. What’s your favourite cake? And kind of tea?

My mother gave me a recipe for the most amazing carrot cake. It was from a book called Sweet and Simply party cakes and I just have a tatty old photocopy but as far as im considered its worth its weight in gold and as my mother always says don’t forget to soak your raisins! I think im going to coin it as an ancient family recipe. Although I would say I don’t like tea I have never actually tried it. I love black coffee and drink far too much. I'm sure you will spy me with a mug or two on fair day.

And what would you say “It’s darling!” about?
My boys are my world. I love them so much and am nothing without them.

Meet the stallholders...tea and cake with Sarah Hill from Freda and Me

Lots of our stallholders travel from all over the country to "It's darling!" and Sarah Hill is no exception. She lives in Derbyshire with her husband, two sons and her kitten and makes vintage fashion and home accessories under the name of Freda and Me. She has shops on Etsy and Folksy and will be at The Guildhall on Saturday 11th December.

The glamorous Sarah Hill

Hi Sarah, what's your favourite tea and cake combo?

I like a coffee and walnut cake with a normal cup of tea. Although a young lady I know makes the most delicious cupcakes

When and why did you start doing Freda and Me?

I've always loved to sew and make things, but having started a family I didn't find much time for creativity. Then last year with my children older and at school, and surrounded by beautiful fabrics, button, lace and other gorgeous items inherited from my grandma, Freda, I started making again. I started with bags and moved on to the corsages and it went from there. I don't have another proper job as such but I do lots of other things with school and at the moment I'm choreographing the chorus in the local Chapel Players Pantomime. I do my creating when ever I can and find it keeps me sane.

Wow! Cool clutch and purse from Freda and Me

Where do you get your ideas from?

As I use vintage and secondhand fabrics etc. I find the materials usually inspire me themselves as they are all so different and beautiful. When I see something I like, a piece of material for example,I start imagining what I could do with it and usually get an excited feeling. I do also have a penchant for fashion magazines from which I gauge current trends. However I don't like to be too dictated by trends as Freda and Me is about being unique.

Sarah's accessories are contemporary vintage

Why did you want to be part of “It’s darling!”?

A friend sent me a link to the Facebook page for the first fair. I couldn't make it then but I loved the idea of the fair and I really liked the way the fair was promoted. I'm therefore really pleased to be part of the Christmas event.

Something to snuggle up to

Describe your ideal Christmas day...

Christmas has always been such a big thing in our family, my husband likes to have the where and who with arranged in July. I love Christmas at home with a big really tree with lots of gifts underneath. The children open some presents when we get up and then start to play. We then start to prepare the meal and await our guests. Before we sit down about four o'clock we hopefully get a walk in. Then as the sun sets we light all the candles and sit down to eat. A three course meal with all the trimmings and a good wine. After food we will sit around open more gifts and then play a family game. By the time it's bedtime I'm tired with blissful happiness.

One for the Christmas list

What’s “It’s darling!” in your life?

My two boys. Sorry husband Nick you are a close second with the kitten snapping at your heels.

HI Emma. What’s your favourite cake? And kind of tea?

Love breakfast tea in a pot, well-stewed, and mums amazing brownies (she won’t give up the recipe sorry its a secret apparently), If I’m out and about I love a good wedge of carrot cake and an espresso!

When my mum Jane was made redundant and I was on maternity leave, we both discovered a passion for Amy Butler fabrics and the crafty side of us came out!

Gorgeous hair-slide by Dufflebobble Crafts

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?

We love kitsch and Cath Kidston-eque fabrics so we are often found hovering around shops that sells these types of things, gathering inspiration.

Why did you want to be part of “It’s darling!”?

The idea of being part of "It's Darling" is just 'Darling' to us. We started chatting to the lovely organisers on Facebook and were asked to join the fun. The feeling of 'It's Darling'! and the creative people behind the idea seem to have the same passion for similar crafts as we do, so it seemed perfect to join the "It's Darling!" festivities.

Something to brighten up the season

Are you doing anything special with your stall for the fair?

We have personalised bunting so you will be able to spot us in the crowd, and for this fair we will be showcasing a range of fascinators and corsages made from fabric flowers, just perfect for the festive season.

Cute bunting

Describe your ideal Christmas day...

Me, my husband and my two daughters are still in our jammys at 11am, opening our stockings, wearing silly hats and the room is awash with wrapping paper and ribbon. Round to mum’s for lunch and the girls have the biggest smiles on their faces. As long as everyone is happy that has to be the best feeling and the whole point of the day for us.

Please finish this sentence: Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without….

Half a Guinness at the local!

What’s “It’s darling!” in your life?

My beautiful babies are simply darling (of course!), the cat’s not bad either!

Ellen was one of our original traders back in July and has always been a staunch supporter of “It’s darling!”. She is an expert in all things woollen and is a knitter and a weaver and a spinner and spins yarn on the stall while she sells. This year she will be having two pitches on Saturday 11th December (going to get ourselves some lovely warm scarves and hats), which is also her birthday. She lives in Newport, South Wales.

Ellen getting in the spirit of "It's darling!" - we have free facepainting on Sunday 12th December.

Hi Ellen, what’s your favourite cake? And kind of tea?

Favorite cake? What’s NOT my favourite cake…  As for tea, I like Earl Grey Tea and Chai Tea

What do you make and sell?

Hand-spun yarn of different fibres. Garmets and items from hand- spun fibre. Everything made by hand!

A hand-spun bag by Ellen and Shepherd's Moon

When and why did you start doing this? Do you do it full time? What inspired you to start?

I have always been a knitter and learned to weave from my Grandmother early on whenever I went to visit her. I currently have and work on the loom that my Granddad made for her. When I moved to the UK from the US in 2007 I wasn’t really finding the type of yarn I wanted to knit with. I joined my local spinner/ weavers guild and learned to spin. Thinking that I couldn’t be the only person who would like something different, I started Shepherd’s Moon in February 2008.  I really enjoy what I do and hope that I end up infecting others with the spinning bug!

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration from?

I just make what catches my eye and hope that others feel the same way!

One of Ellen's scarves (posed by model)

Why did you want to be part of “It’s darling!”?

I was in the first “It’s Darling!” Fair in July. I really enjoyed the experience and the folks that I met there! I learned of it originally from a friend who was thinking of taking part.

Describe your ideal Christmas day...

My ideal Christmas Day is spending it with my little boy, Owain and my family…  I am wearing something very comfortable and having a Bailey’s!

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without….

Soppy Christmas songs, and Morcombe and Wise!
