You name the day

Hello everyone, hope you are having a wonderful July, albeit a bit cloudy/rainy at times. Rebecca and I had great fun at the very first "It's darling!" and were so inspired by your support that we have decided to try and arrange a Christmas fair.

We looked into dates at the Guildhall's Bruswick Room, but the key Christmas dates (26th November and the 4th December) are already booked out. So we are thinking of running the fair either on the 20th November or the 11th December. The advantage for us on the 11th is that the Christmas Market in Bath will still be on, so there will be more people in the city with their shopping heads on. The disadvantage is that it could come at the end of a number of Christmas shopping events and people might be fed up of forking out by then.

So we thought we would ask you - stallholders and customers - and have put a little poll on the sidebar of this blog. We are also looking into potential other venues in Bath so if you have any suggestions let us know. If we do have the Guildhall we are thinking about making the fair bigger, but that will depend on interest. Anyway, it would be great if you could fill in the poll and let us know your thoughts below or email us at itsdarlingfair@gmail.com

Thank you

Becky and Cath

Meet the stallholders: 60 seconds with...Catherine Stokes from Mrs Stokes Vintage China

I moved to Bath last December after giving up a hectic media life and wanted to see if the dream of living a quieter life would live up to my expectations. So I decided to sell vintage china, mainly because it's so pretty - and now I am hooked. I had the idea to present them in nice giftboxes which has been a popular wedding/christmas gift and have a regular stall at Green Park Station Market in the city where I also sell handmade jewellery and other vintage bits and pieces too.

Mrs Stokes looking a bit pale - working too hard on "It's darling!" methinks

I am married to a wonderful, curly-headed fella called Jai (J for Jonathan, although don't call him that), have a wonderful mother Suzanne who is taking a stall at the fair too, lovely sister, brother-in-law, niece, stepdad, dad, little brothers and sisters...it's a big family and I love them all. I never planned to organise a vintage and handmade fair, it just kind of happened that way, when I met the very talented Rebecca Amesbury of Purple Sparkle Crafts. We were having a coffee one day when we thought "wouldn't it be good if...." So three months and not-a- lot-of-sleep later we have arranged the hall, booked the stallholders, bought the tea, washed the china and are ready to welcome whoever comes through the door!

Mrs Stokes' signature teaset-giftboxes

We really are looking forward to seeing what happens on Saturday and want to thank everyone who has supported us and the stallholders. My teaset giftboxes will be £20 rather than the usual £25 as a special offer for the fair only.

My three second wisdom is life's too short to worry (although I do all the time), my desert island survival kit is Redbush tea, my husband (he's really good at making things and would love to think of himself as a bit of a survival expert), and of course a cup and saucer (does that count as one thing?)

To find out more go to my blog, my website or come and visit me at Green Park Station in Bath on a Saturday.

Meet the stallholders: 60 seconds with.....Suzanne Lenihan aka Mrs Stokes' Mum

Suzanne Lenihan is calling her stall  "Mrs Stokes's Mother". It's true after all and she is bringing her gorgeous array of handmade cushion covers, bunting, lavender/rose bags and various other household soft furnishing items. She lives by the seaside in glorious Hayling Island in Hampshire and has been making things "since the children were small."

Suzanne in her lovely sunny garden by the sea

1. Why did you want to be part of "It's darling!" Did Mrs Stokes bribe you?

Ha, ha, no, it's because I thought it was such a good idea - aren't we all a little bored going around the same shops, selling the same things in every town we go to? There are so many talented crafts people out there but it's not always easy for them to find the right places to show their work.

2. What's your passion?

My family - my wonderful husband John, beautiful daughters Cathy and Emma, their fantastic husbands Jai and Owen and not forgetting our utterly delightful granddaughter Erin. My passion apart from my family is circle dancing ( which is not line dancing)

Suzanne made this bunting especially for "It's darling!"

3) Have you any special offers for "It's darling!"

I'm selling bags of assorted coloured beads for craft projects at 40p a bag

4) What's your three second wisdom - life or craft advice?

Love what you're doing/making, go back and fix any mistakes because even if nobody else notices it you'll always know that it's there. And stop when you get tired because that always the time that things go wrong.

Beautiful handmade cushions

5) What's your desert island surival kit?

Hand cream, BBC Radio 7 and a soft pillow.

To contact Suzanne please email her.

Meet the stallholders: 60 seconds with...Soleil from Bisous Vintage

Soleil Martin spends most of her Saturdays at Green Park Station market at the moment, helping Mrs Stokes sell her vintage china. Soleil has an eye for the beautiful and the stylish, which is why it's no surprise that she is putting her talents to good use and running her own vintage clothes and accessories stall at "It's darling!" She doesn't have a blog or a website at the moment but she says, "if the fair goes well, who knows?"

Sunny Soleil

1. Hi Soleil, what's behind the name of your stall?

"Bisous" is French for kisses. My father is French and my name means "Sun" in French.

2. How long have you been doing what you do?

This is the first time I have held my own stall; I usually help run Mrs Stokes Vintage China stall at Green Park Station market.

3. Why did you start?

My dream is to one day open my own shop selling vintage clothing.

4. What's your inspiration/ethos behind what you do?

I have always loved vintage clothes. I’ve always liked the idea of wearing clothes that have a story.

"Bisous" is French for kisses

7. Why did you want to be part of "It's Darling!"

I’m very excited to be part of ‘It’s darling!’ because I think it’s about time Bath held a vintage and handmade fair.

8. What's your piece of "three second wisdom"?

"People need to be made more aware of the need to work at learning how to live, because life is so quick and sometimes it goes away too quickly" – Andy Warhol

9. What in your life would you say is "It's Darling!" and can we have a picture of that?

I recently bought a blue polka dot 50’s style dress, I definitely think it’s darling!

Soleil thinks this gorgeous dress is darling - so do we

If you want to contact Soleil, come and find her at Mrs Stokes Vintage China on Saturdays at Green Park Station Market - or at "It's darling!"

The It's darling! guide to Bath

We know that there are many of you coming to Bath for the day on Saturday and we are really looking forward to seeing you. But we also thought you might like a bit of a potted travel guide to Bath, "It's darling!" style - where to find us, how to get there, where to have lunch. We'll be adding to it over the next couple of days, so keep checking!

Where to find us

The Guildhall, High Street, Bath, BA1 5AW, Tel: 01225 39 40 41
The fair opens at 9am and last admittance is 5.30pm. And it's free to get in.

Where to park

Cricket Pavillion Carpark - long stay

Charlotte Street Carpark - long stay

Waitrose Carpark - short stay 4 hours at a time but very near The Guildhall

Public Transport

By rail: Bath is well-served by trains. There are hourly direct trains from Southampton and Portsmouth and half-hourly trains from London, Reading, Didcot and Chippenham. You can also reach Bath from Wales via Bristol Parkway and from the North via Bristol Temple Meads. There are also local routes from Bristol, Weymouth, Westbury, Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge and Frome - and probably more besides.

See http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/ for more details

By bus: There are plenty of great bus routes -check the First Group Website for comprehensive details and maps. If you are planning to travel by bus should note that the area around Bath might be busy that day because of different events in the area like an air tatoo in Fairford - so leave early or with plenty of time.

Park and Ride: Services operate every 12-15 minutes making it a great option for visitors.

Where to eat and drink

The Garrick's Head
Gastropub near the Theatre Royal. Stylish pub, good grub (although a bit hidden by the scaffolding over the theatre at the mo).

The Riverside
Near the, ahem, the river - and The Guildhall (round the back of it). Veggie burgers, salads, pizzas. Some outside seating but it does get busy - as does everywhere at lunchtime.

Jamie's Italian in Milsom Place
Well worth the queue to get in and in a very swanky part of Bath too

The Metropolitan Cafe
Stylish vegetarian cafe above a gift shop in the centre of town

Tea Time - opposite Bath Spa station
Cute tea party vibe - sandwiches, smoothies and of course cakes (though there will be plenty of those courtesy of Country Cupcakes at the fair). The perfect place to stop on the way back to the station.

There is also a big new bar-restaurant at the back of Jolly's House of Fraser store on Milsom Place. We can't remember at all what it's called but it is huge so there will always be enough room for everyone and it looks very swanky too.

Other things to do

Get there early and visit the Farmer's Market at Green Park Station, near the big Sainsbury's where you can park for an hour. There are artisan stalls there all day (we love them all, especially Wiltshire Tea and lovely Becky Sage the florist) but the food producers leave by lunchtime. Our favourites include: Homewood Cheeses.

Visit the "Diana's dresses" exhibition at the Fashion museum. Starts 17th July - 10 of Princess Diana's most famous dresses.

After you've done the royal dresses, check out her ex Prince Charles' Highgrove Shop on Milsom Street - his second store. It even sells Highgrove champagne don'cha know.

Take in a bit of high culture at the Victoria Art Gallery, opposite the river behind the Guildhall.

Sit in the square near the Abbey, watch the coach parties watch the street magicians and artists and sing along with Bath's one reggae busker (yep, there's only one doing Bob Marley, so he's Bath Main Celebrity. Think he's considered "alternative")

Talking of celebrities, try and spot actor Anthony Head about town. He's been spotted in Waitrose and Starbucks recently, both of which are near the Guildhall. He's obviously "between jobs." Happens to the best of us, Ant.

Go for a walk in the Botanical Gardens in Victoria Park

Bring your cossie and spend a couple of hours in the Thermae Spa - Bath's natural spring. You've got to try the heated rooftop pool with views of the Abbey. Beautiful (but if you're on your own, give it a miss at dusk. Tends to get a bit "romantic" then).

For more ideas check the Visit Bath website - we're on there too

Meet the stallholders: 60 seconds with....Angharad from Angharad Gamble Millinery

Angharad Gamble is a costume maker based in Barry, South Wales who also makes the most wonderful hats and fascinators in her spare time, under the name of Angharad Gamble Millinery. We would show you a picture of her but she says that there are "no acceptable photos of me available at this time, must do something about that" - so we'll represent her instead with one of her incredible pieces of headwear.

Turn heads in one of Angharad's super-stylish creations

1. Hi Angharad, how long have you been making hats?

I've been doing this for lmost ten years now, as part of my job as a costume maker. Promoting my millinery in its own right  is a more recent departure

2. What inspired you to start?

Millinery was one of the specialist skills I learnt as part of my costume making degree. I loved it and have been making hats ever since. As there aren't as many commissions for headwear as part of my job, events like "It's darling!" are the perfect excuse to make them just for the sake of it and to take commissions for people to make the hat they always wanted. And with vintage and handmade sellers and like minded creative people all gathered together in the same place on the 17th, who could resist taking part?!

Angharad will be taking commissions to make the hat you always dreamed of

I'm inspired a lot by the hat styles of the earlier 20th century. Sometimes a trimming (usually vintage) will send me off to my stash to hunt out the perfect felt, straw or fabric to set it off. On other ocassions, it's a shape that will inspire me. I can often be found in the homewares departments of local stores turning dishes etc upside down to see if they'll make a nice hat block! My absolute favourite hats to make, however, are my miniature and tiny silk top hats. So cute.

3. What's your secret passion?
You might think that as a costume maker I would get immune to it, but I do love to dress up in a proper-no-holds-barred costume ball way. I don't get chance to that often, so the opportunity to make something for myself and to use some of those special treasures from my stash so I get to keep them is a bit of a guilty pleasure : )

4. What's your three second wisdom?
Enjoy what you do.

 A cherry fascinator

5. What's your desert island survival pack?
A VERY large sun hat, my sewing kit and my dogs for entertainment and company : )

6. What in your life would you say is "It's darling!"?
My dogs - an irresistably darling duo.

 Her best boys

Angharad is in the process of setting up a website, so in the meantime please email her if you would like to know more. And come and try some of her hats on the 17th!

Meet the stallholders…60 seconds with Bryn from Kay’s Eclectic Vintage..

And now for something completely different…Bryn Lewis who is based in Cardiff tells us all about herself and her blossoming vintage business in her own words. Oh and she is Becky Purple Sparkle’s mum too! What do they put in the water in Wales? Talent runs in that family.

Linens by Kay's Electic Vintage aka Bryn

Hello, My name is Brynda but I am usually known as Bryn - and my middle name is Kay - hence my stall's title. I don't have a website or shop but you can always contact me via e-mail or my new blog. I would love to hear from anyone who has the same interest as I have.  I've been interested in linen since I was quite young when I used to embroider chairbacks, tablecloths and so on (slight giveaway of my age there!) I have always wanted to have a stall selling vintage linens but, as usual, life got in the way, until my very talented daughter re-inspired me.

Bryn aka Kay's Eclectic Vintage aka Becky Purple Sparkle's proud mum

I began looking at my old things, then my Mum's old things, then old things in other places and soon I was hooked.  I even bought a new sewing machine so that I could really get back to my younger, crafty self!  I concentrate on vintage linens but also have jewellery and pottery plus a few glass items. “It's darling!” is ideal for my goodies - I share the same ethos of wanting to bring some of the beautiful things from the past to the people of today.

I have a husband who tolerates everything I do - I think he secretly loves it when I am away for the day/weekend!  I have a gorgeous, talented daughter who inspires me and who keeps me fit by sending me to craft fairs as the Welsh half of Purple Sparkle.  To keep me sane I bury my head in a book, watch 'rubbish' on TV and occasionally pop over to Egypt for a spot of fish, dolphin and shark watching, thirty metres under the Red Sea.

 Bryn's mascot cat

My three second wisdom is if you like it buy it
; you'll always regret the one that got away.  To my Desert Island I would have to have my scuba kit and an unlimited supply of compressed air, the complete set of books by Cormac McCarthy and Mia, my pussycat who has never managed to grow up.

Mia, Bryn's real cat

I don't have a website or shop but you can always contact me via e-mail or on my blog. See you on Saturday the 17th!

Meet the stallholders: 60 seconds with.....Claire from Random Vintage

Two years ago, Claire Weeks, who is based in Cardiff started her handmade jewellery company. She has two collections, Random Vintage and Random Vintage Repeatables and uses both vintage and “new vintage” finds to create beautiful and unusual pieces you just have to have now. Or on July 17th.

"Message in a bottle" necklace by Random Vintage

1. Hi Claire, tell us what inspired you to start your business.

When I was little my grandmother used to give me bits and pieces of broken costume jewellery.  When I came across them years later, I had the idea of making new pieces out of it, as I wanted to bring them back to life in a modern, more wearable style. It seemed such a waste having these pretty pieces tucked away because they were damaged or out of style. The more Random Vintage has developed, the more passionate I’ve become about recycling and re-using unwanted or unloved vintage items and giving them a new lease of life.

The lovely - and talented - Claire Weeks of Random Vintage

2. And what inspires you now?

I visit a lot of antiques fairs and flea markets, looking for vintage pieces to incorporate into my work. These shows can be very inspiring - seeing the different colour combinations, different textures, and how jewellery styles have changed over time. I also look at old books and fairy stories and try to create pieces with a theme in mind.

For the Random Vintage collection I make one-off individual pieces using worn and loved vintage items such as brooches, charms, rosarys, religious relics, old lockets and earrings and mix these with beautiful precious and semi-precious stones, vintage beads and rhinestones to make unique statement pieces.

"Summer in Paris" necklace - Claire loves all things French

The Random Vintage Repeatables collection uses a mixture of new 'vintage' style items to create fun, quirky, wearable and affordable pieces. I also make vintage style decorations,  headbands and vintage bunting.

4. Why did you want to be part of “It’s darling!”?

Well as a vintage and handmade fan I just had to be a part of it - and the fact that it’s set in beautiful Bath is the icing on the cake! I can’t wait to see all the goodies and meet all those super talented sellers.

Beautiful earrings

5. Tell us what you’re passionate about
.

I love French films, I’m slightly obsessed with France hence a lot of French pieces are incorporated into my jewellery, and I’m brushing up on my French as I’m planning a trip to the Parisian flea markets to stock up on vintage goodies.  Flea markets are my guilty pleasure, I absolutely love the hunt for treasures, I get stomach flips as soon as I arrive at a flea market , finding someone’s unwanted bits and seeing the potential they hold is very exciting. I love unpacking my finds when I get home and giving them a good clean up and then putting them to use.

6. What’s your three second wisdom – life or crafting advice?!

If you’re in a creative rut, don’t force it! If you’re trying to make things and are feeling uninspired, it’s just not going to happen no matter how hard you try. Do something else and go back to it when you feel the creative juices flowing.

Pocketwatch necklace

7. What’s your desert island survival pack?

My ipod, sun lotion (as I burn easily!) and Viggo Mortensen, though it have would have to be on the condition he was dressed as Aragorn.

8. What in your life would you say is “It’s darling!”?

I love collecting things in miniature - tiny dolls, itty bitty figurines. I have a particular penchant for mini rabbits, I don’t know why, maybe it’s an Alice in Wonderland thing. A while ago I found an amazing Belgian seller on ETSY called ingie, she makes the cutest mini rabbits out of mohair, I now have quite a collection of these little dears.

Claire loves anything minature like these little rabbits

Hot off the press!

Your "It's darling!" organisers have been working hard to promote the fair, which is a week on Saturday. I just can't believe it's come round so quickly. So I thought I would give you a little round up of everywhere that has covered us so far, if only to reassure Becky and myself that we have been doing the right thing...it's like having a party, you don't know who will turn up until the day.

But before I launch into what we've been doing, I thought I would post an article from July's Elle Deco magazine (super-glam), all about The Makery, the craft workshop hub that will be running workshops on the day. Customers will be able to learn how to make things themselves on the day and take away their creations for only £5! That has got to be a bargain. We're so pleased that The Makery are going to be doing this as it's something we wanted to do from the beginning, to give something extra to the fair in addition to shopping from loads of wonderful stalls.

Now onto our own press....

We had a wonderful story in the Bath Chronicle

And on the tourist board's official site Visit Bath

On Heart FM's website

Also on Bath 360 website

And listings in Bath Life magazine and The Bath Magazine

Of course our own wonderful stallholders have also been doing their bit and promoting us through their blogs and websites and Facebook pages and we will be continuing to leaflet the city. Apparently the customers of Found boutique in Aryglle Street really like the flyer and have been picking it up in droves So big thanks to Found for putting them on their counter next to the till. I've also got to say massive thanks to Green Park Station Market which a really big poster about the event on their board in the entrance hall and considering we will be open at the same time as their regular Saturday market, I think it's so generous of them to do this. Maybe we can encourage people to pop down there afterwards to have a look at more local artisans' work and just make it one big independent sellers in Bath day.

If anyone has any bright ideas about where else we should target, then let us know. We still have some time to get a few stories in before the big day!!

Meet the stallholders: 60 seconds with.....Lynda and Alys from Rockfollies Vintage

Lynda & Alys Case we are a mother and daughter duo who call themselves Rock Follies Vintage and who are based in Worcester. They show at vintage fairs around the Midlands and South West and make felt vintage button brooches, corsages from original 1940's patterns and also have a range of recycled and reworked items,  including their "Flirty Skirts." They explain "these are re-worked skirts on quality elastic ribbing and feature vintage buttons (they have proved really popular with students who like to team them up with a vintage piece from our rails perhaps a 40's style shirt or a 1980's mohair knit ). We have also just launched a range of "Born to Shop" lined shopping bags, made from vintage fabrics and feature Vintage Buttons and a printed Rock Follies Fabric Label, and are just launching our on-trend Maxi Dress from vintage fabric built on a modern Bustier Top with vintage buttons !! we are bringing in new lines every season, that complement our Beautiful Vintage Collection". Phew they sound busy (and were so busy they didn't send any pics so you will have to come on the 17th to see their lovely things.

1. How long have you been doing what you do?

We have a combination as a Mother and daughter duo, Lynda (mother) has sewed for years and Alys has the edgy fashion ideas. We started Rock Follies Vintage in October 2009, so although we are quiet new we have jumped in the deep end and have been very busy and our next fair will be our 20th!! We just love it and cant keep away!

2. Why did you start?

We went to a vintage shop and looked at each other and said "We could do this." Two days later we had a fair booked and  a collection in the loft and have not looked back.

3. What's your inspiration?

We just love vintage clothes, fabrics, buttons, even zips - they are better quality than those made today and so lovely. It's wicked that so many clothes are still being mass produced and you can not go into most towns and buy a piece of fabric and a sewing pattern.  We have some great ideas which we will develop over the next few years. ' Wear Forever' is our Mantra.

4. Why did you want to be part of "It's darling!"?

It sounds just perfect for us - handmade and Vintage - what more could you want? Our customers just love it so do we.

5. Any personal details you care to share? Partner, kids, hobbies, guilty pleasures?

Lynda has a wonderful supportive partner in Gary, he is always there to push a rail, set up a stall and encourage her in my dream of getting my own shop. Alys has just finished a busy year of study and is looking forward to developing some great ideas for Rock Follies Reworks and has also got some exciting new developments that will be launching at Christmas for a complete "Vintage Make Over."

6. What's your piece of "three second wisdom" - life or crafting advice?

'Use a Thimble'

7. What three things would you want to be stranded on a desert island with?

Sewing Machine, fabric, cotton

I wanted to take my art onto an affordable playing field and the work really suited placement onto products

3. What's the inspiration behind what you do?

I love the nostalgia of all things vintage but love to combine different bits of ephemera and put them on the same page, breathing new life into the old. Hence the name 'New Vintage'

4. Why did you want to be part of "It's darling!"?

Because it seems a lovely celebration of vintage, all in the beautiful Bath setting.

 Nicky's stall at Bath's Christmas Market 2009

5. Any personal details you care to share? Partner, kids, hobbies, guilty pleasures?

I have a fantastic son called Jack, gardening is my sanctuary and guilty pleasure....'SMASH'! (potato in a packet!!!)

6. What's your piece of "three second wisdom" - life or crafting advice.

Success in the arts = a 1/3 talent, a 1/3 good luck and a 1/3 staying power!

7. What three things would you want to be stranded on a desert island with?

My son, Stevie Wonder CDs and my bed!

For more info about Nicky and her work visit www.nickysnow.co.uk  or email enquiries@nickysnow.co.uk. And of course come and see her at "It's darling!" You can also see her decorated lion, part of Bath's "Pride in our City" campaign of 100 differently designed lion statues, in The Whole Bagel, Upper Borough Walls in Bath - very near the Guildhall.

Where Can We Go?
